The US drilling rig count is seesawing between gains and losses.

EQT Corp., Pittsburgh, has suspended a test program in the Utica shale to concentrate on drilling in the Marcellus shale boosted by its planned acquisition of Rice Energy Inc., Canonsburg, Pa.

Pennsylvania’s Senate approved a tax reform bill with provisions to tax both natural gas production and consumption in the state. Oil and gas trade associations there strongly criticized the July 26 action, which passed by a 26-24 vote. The amended bill, which apparently attempts to close a budget deficit, now heads back to the state House, where its prospects are uncertain.

Second-quarter value for US oil and gas mergers and acquisitions was
