The Baker Hughes Inc. count of active US oil-directed drilling rigs this week added the 99th and 100th units to come online since the drilling rebound began following the week ended May 27.

Cobalt International Energy Inc., Houston, has entered into an amendment to its drilling contract with Rowan (UK) Reliance Ltd., an affiliate of Rowan Cos. PLC, providing for the early termination of Cobalt’s long-term drilling contract for the Rowan Reliance drillship.

The US rig count surged above 500 units working, gaining 11 rigs to reach a total of 508 during the week ending Sept. 9, according to Baker Hughes Inc. data. This total was still 340 units lower than a year ago.

A week in which offshore operators braced for a potential hurricane strike didn’t prevent another rise in the overall US rig count.

Seadrill Ltd. says it’s disputing the grounds for termination of the West Pegasus semisubmersible drilling rig contract by Pemex Exploracion y Servicios, and “is reviewing its legal options.” Pemex submitted a notice of termination to Seadrill effective Aug. 16.

Entirely comprising oil-directed units, the US drilling rig count increased by 10 during the week ended Aug. 19, according to data from Baker Hughes Inc.
